I'm a portrait and documentary photographer, born in Sheffield, England, and based in State College, Pennsylvania. I return to England often, and my work has always moved between the two, and between two kinds of picture: the ones I find, and the ones I make.

In the studio, I make portraits. I'm after the moment a person comes alive — a gesture, a turn of the head, a flicker of connection — not a pose held still for the camera. A good portrait is a conversation between three people, the last of whom is whoever eventually stops to look.

In the field, I find pictures. My documentary work grows out of a love of history, gathered into long-form projects, each headed toward a book: a portrait of Cambridge, a journey around London's Monopoly board, a study of the statues of Westminster, and a look at the small towns in Central Pennsylvania,

I also write literary essays about the places I photograph, treating history with the same close attention I give a portrait. I'm drawn to what a frame keeps and what it leaves out: a parish church and its murdered boy-saint, a street that changed its name when no one was looking, a chapel floor worn smooth by four centuries of feet. For me, the camera and the page are the same habit of looking.

I earned my Bachelor of Design in Professional Photography from Penn State in 2024, where I was named Student Marshal for the College of Arts and Architecture. I'm a member of the American Society of Media Photographers.
